Smart TV and Streaming Setup for Seniors in Yamba

Published: June 3, 2026 | Service area: Yamba, Maclean, Iluka and Clarence Valley

A Smart TV lets you watch Netflix, ABC iview, YouTube and other streaming services without a set-top box or aerial. But if the remote has too many buttons or the screen is asking for passwords, it can feel overwhelming. Here's the straightforward version.

What is a Smart TV?

A Smart TV connects to your home Wi-Fi and runs apps — just like a phone or tablet. The apps are shown as squares or icons on the home screen. Common ones include Netflix, Stan, Kayo, YouTube, and ABC iview.

Step 1: Connect to Wi-Fi

  • Turn the TV on and press the Home or Menu button on the remote.
  • Look for a gear icon (Settings) or a Wi-Fi symbol.
  • Select Network or Internet, then pick your home Wi-Fi network from the list.
  • Enter your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard and press Connect.

Step 2: Sign in to streaming apps

  • Press the Home button and find the app you want (e.g., Netflix).
  • If it's not installed, look for an App Store icon, search for the app, and install it.
  • Open the app — it will ask for an email and password. This is the login you created when you signed up for the service.
  • If someone in your family set it up, they may need to enter the password the first time.

Step 3: Get used to the remote

  • Home button — usually a house icon. Takes you back to the main screen.
  • Directional pad — the circle or ring you press up/down/left/right to move around.
  • OK / Select — the centre of the directional pad. Press this to open something.
  • Back / Return — an arrow pointing left. Goes back one screen.
  • Some remotes have dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube or Prime Video — press these to jump straight into that app.

Step 4: Adjust the basics

  • Volume: use the volume rocker or slider on the side of the remote.
  • Subtitles: press the Subtitles or CC button while watching a show to toggle them on.
  • Change input: if the screen says "No Signal", press the Source or Input button and select the correct HDMI port (usually HDMI 1 for a set-top box).

Common streaming services explained

  • Netflix — movies, TV shows, documentaries. Requires a paid subscription.
  • ABC iview — free. Australian TV shows, news and kids' content. No subscription needed.
  • SBS On Demand — free. International movies, news and sport. No subscription.
  • YouTube — free (with ads). Millions of videos on every topic.
  • Stan / Kayo / Binge — paid subscriptions for movies, sport and TV series.

Troubleshooting tips

  • App won't open or freezes: Restart the TV (turn it off at the wall, wait 30 seconds, turn back on).
  • Wi-Fi keeps dropping: Move the TV closer to the router, or consider a mesh extender.
  • Forgotten password: On the app's login screen, select "Forgot password" and follow the steps using your email.
  • Remote stopped working: Replace the batteries (usually AAAs). If it uses a USB charger, plug it in overnight.

When to call for help

If you can't get the TV connected to Wi-Fi, apps won't install, or you'd just prefer someone to set it all up so it works from day one — that's what I'm here for. A home visit in Yamba or Clarence Valley costs from $70 and includes connecting the TV, logging into your apps, and showing you how it all works.
