Common Internet Issues in Grafton (and How to Fix Them)
Grafton's mix of older homes, regional NBN and weatherboard construction creates a specific set of internet headaches. Here's what's causing your dropouts — and what actually fixes them.
NBN dropouts in older Grafton homes
Much of Grafton — South Grafton, Junction Hill, and streets around Turf Street — runs on FTTN. That's fibre to the node, then old copper phone lines for the last stretch into your house. Those lines were never built for broadband. Rain, wind, or simple age can drop your connection.
Quick test: if your NBN box shows a blinking DSL light during dropouts, the fault is between the node and your socket. Try a different phone socket — the first one off the street is usually cleanest. No improvement? Likely a line fault needing an NBN tech.
Copper-wire interference
Old internal wiring is the silent killer of Grafton internet. Pre-1990s homes often have daisy-chained sockets, corroded joints, or unshielded cable running alongside power lines under the house. All of it injects noise into your DSL signal.
If you hear crackling on a corded phone plugged into the same line, you've got a wiring fault. A central splitter installed by a licensed cabler isolates the DSL signal and often fixes it in one visit.
Wi-Fi dead zones in weatherboard houses
Grafton's weatherboard and chamferboard homes are beautiful — and brutal on Wi-Fi. Foil-backed insulation in timber walls acts like a Faraday cage. Add a long hallway layout (classic Queenslander-style) and the back bedroom may as well be on the moon.
Skip the cheap range extender. A mesh Wi-Fi system with two or three nodes along the hallway pushes signal past those walls. For single-storey, one central router plus a mesh satellite usually covers it.
When to call a tech vs DIY
- DIY: Restart the router. Move it out of the cupboard. Try a different phone socket. Run a speed test on Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi.
- Call a tech: DSL light blinks constantly. Dropouts every time it rains. Visible corrosion on your phone socket. Wi-Fi won't reach rooms despite changing channels and placement.
